Gboyega AkinsanmiĆ¢ The All Progressives Congress Volunteers Group at the weekend described the rate at which the country’s population is grow as alarming, thereby asking President Muhammadu Buhari “to come up with a policy statement or even a law to control birth.”
The group added that the fight against unemployment in the country
would not yield much-desired outcome without looking critically at the
power sector, noting that stable power supply would reduce unemployment
rate by 20 per cent.
The group’s National Coordinator, Mr. Olusegun Bamgbose, sought the
introduction of birth control policy in the country at a news conference
on Saturday at Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre in Alausa, saying it was
high time the federal government did not something about its population.
At the conference, the national coordinator tasked the Buhari
administration “to come up with a policy statement or even a law to
control birth. We cannot afford to leave the population growth
uncontrolled.
“Our attempts to find lasting solution to the problem of unemployment
may be a mirage without controlling our population growth. In a
situation where our resources are depleting, we cannot afford not to
check the population growth.
“The government must look into the issue of controlling birth as a
matter of urgency. We are optimistic that the Buhari administration will
make the difference, but something must be done about our population
growth.”
Bamgbose also urged the Buhari administration “to fine-tune ways to
make power stable,” noting that power stability “attract foreign
investment, thereby minimizing the rate of unemployment in the country.”
Aside, Bamgbose commended Buhari’s effort on anti-corruption war and
anti-terror campaign, noting that there “cannot be any meaningful
development in an atmosphere of corruption. Buhari is taking his time to
lay a solid foundation for better and secure future of Nigeria and her
citizens.
“We equally appreciate his determination to make Boko Haram history in
Nigeria. Foreign investment will be non-existent where there is no
guarantee for security of lives and property. We want to give him pass
mark for his performance. His emergence is a blessing to Nigeria,” he
remarked.
The national coordinator said the group had set up an Economic Team
with a mandate to produce a blue-print on how best to tackle the
challenge of unemployment in the country.
He said the 17-man team, which would be chaired by an economist, Mr.
Tope Fasua, was expected to submit its report team three months after
the inauguration of the committee consisting members of the group in the
country and outside.
